What is ischemia-reperfusion injury in organ transplantation?

Ischemia-reperfusion injury can occur when an organ experiences reduced oxygen delivery followed by restoration of oxygenated perfusion. This process may contribute to cellular stress, inflammation, edema, and reduced organ function. DCD and other high-risk donor organs can be particularly vulnerable to these preservation and reperfusion-related stresses.
