What is ischemia-reperfusion injury in organ transplantation?

Ischemia-reperfusion injury can occur when an organ experiences reduced oxygen delivery followed by restoration of oxygenated perfusion. This process may contribute to cellular stress, inflammation, edema, and reduced organ function. Organs from Donation after Cardiocirculatory Death (DCD), as well as other marginal and high-risk donor organs, can be particularly vulnerable due to warm ischemia, preservation conditions, and reperfusion-related stresses.
