What is DCD organ transplantation?

DCD stands for Donation after Cardiocirculatory Death. These are organs donated after the heart has stopped, rather than after brain death donation (DBD). Because blood flow has stopped before the organ is cooled and preserved, DCD organs may experience warm ischemia, a period of reduced oxygen delivery that can affect organ quality and transplant suitability.
